From Blinking Folder to Full Boot: A MacBook A1534 Repair Story in Doha
A customer recently walked into Shooter for Computer, our repair shop in Doha, Qatar, carrying a sleek 12-inch MacBook A1534 and a major concern.
“My MacBook only shows a blinking folder with a question mark. It won’t start!”
He tried booting into recovery mode, but Disk Utility wasn’t showing any usable storage. Only a strange volume named:
Disk Volume 2 • 144 • 120 • 832
Size: 2.1GB
He was expecting to see his 256GB SSD, but instead his MacBook looked like it had lost its brain.

🔍 Initial Diagnosis: More Than Just a Software Problem
We booted the Mac into Internet Recovery using Option + Command + R, then opened Disk Utility.
We selected View > Show All Devices… still no internal Apple SSD — just a tiny 2.1GB ghost volume. That confirmed this was not a software issue. The internal SSD was either:
- Corrupted,
- Not powered correctly,
- Or partially dead.
And since the A1534’s SSD is soldered to the logic board, this was going to be a chip-level repair.
🔧 The Real Fix: Replacing the U9000 2.8V SSD Control IC
We removed the logic board and inspected it under the microscope. The problem pointed to U9000, a tiny chip that delivers 2.8V power to the SSD controller.
After measuring voltages, we confirmed the 2.8V line was missing — meaning the SSD couldn’t power up, so the MacBook couldn’t detect or boot from it.
What we did:
- Carefully removed the faulty U9000 IC.
- Replaced it with a new, original 2.8V SSD power IC.
- Verified all power rails, cleaned the board, and reassembled the MacBook.
✅ Success: Full 256GB SSD Restored & macOS Reinstalled
After repair, we powered it up and went into Disk Utility again. This time:
nginxCopyEditApple SSD – 251 GB
Container disk1 – APFS
We erased the disk, reinstalled macOS, and booted straight to the setup screen — no more blinking folder, no more panic.

🧠 Why This Story Matters
Many repair shops would’ve recommended a full logic board replacement — expensive and unnecessary.
At Shooter for Computer, we specialize in micro-soldering and IC-level diagnostics. We saved this customer’s MacBook and data with a single chip replacement, not a full board.
