Real Repair Story: HP 17-cn0534sa with No Power – Fixed Without Boardview or Schematic in Doha
At Shooter for Computer in Doha, Qatar, we often get challenging repairs — laptops that won’t turn on, with no clear signs of damage. But one case this week stood out:
A customer brought in their HP 17-cn0534sa laptop. The issue?
Completely dead – no charging light, no fan, no response.
It’s a common issue in many modern HP models. But this one had a twist: the motherboard (6050A3261701-MB-A02) had no schematics, no boardview, and no obvious short circuit.

🔍 Step 1: Basic Testing – No Shorts Found
As always, we started with the basics:
- Checked input voltage from the adapter – OK ✅
- No short to ground on high-side power rails – ✅
- Charger IC present and active – ✅
- SIO chip (System I/O) getting standby voltage – ⚠️ Yes, but no enable or power-on signals.
That narrowed it down fast: the issue was somewhere around the SIO controller. But without a schematic or boardview file, it was going to take deeper investigation.
🧠 Step 2: Tracing SIO Signals – Manually
We carefully probed the board under a microscope and compared known HP design patterns. Two key SIO-related signals were missing:
- EC_RST# (Embedded controller reset)
- SLP_S5# (Sleep state power OK signal)
These are essential for any modern laptop to even start the boot sequence. No wonder the laptop was dead.
🔧 Step 3: Finding the Fault Without a Map
Using experience and logic:
- We located the U-series MOSFETs and associated resistors near the SIO chip.
- Found a bad 0-ohm resistor feeding the EC_RST# line – internally cracked but not visibly burned.
- Replaced the resistor, then patched a missing SLP_S5# signal line by bridging to an upstream point using wire wrap technique.
All this was done without boardview or schematic, just using component layout understanding and multimeter continuity tracing.
✅ Final Result: Power Restored!
After reassembly:
- Adapter light turned on 🔋
- Power button lit up 💡
- Fan spun up and display came on 🖥️
- BIOS loaded and passed POST ✅
The customer was stunned:
“I thought I had to replace the whole board — you brought it back from the dead!”
🔁 Why This Repair Matters
Most repair shops would say “no power – change motherboard” or “need schematic, can’t fix.”
At Shooter for Computer, we use experience, signal tracing, and advanced logic board techniques to repair without diagrams — saving the customer money, time, and data.
